The Arrupe Centre is a women’s skills training centre run by JRS South Africa. Situated in the Johannesburg suburb of Yeoville, the centre provides women with English language training, followed by skills training courses in sewing, hairdressing, baking, cosmetology and computer literacy. Upon successful completion of their training, women are issued with start up kits (for example a sewing machine and materials, if they had completed the sewing course). They then undergo a business training seminar, and are then supported and monitored to ensure that they can use their newly acquired skills to generate income for themselves and their children. Courses last three months – the centre has four intakes per year.

On Thursday 22 September, the graduation of the third intake for 2017 took place at the Cathedral Hall in Johannesburg. Certificates were issued to all who successfully completed their courses – 12 for baking, 16 for hairdressing, 22 for cosmetology, 8 for computer literacy, 18 for sewing and 43 for English.

The day was marked by much celebration – singing and dancing. JRS South Africa wishes the women well on their frst step towards financial self- reliance.
